THE PEOPLE BEHIND TKR PAINTING
Painting is something Troy genuinely loves. After around 15 years in the trade, it's still the work he takes the greatest pride in.
For Troy, the satisfaction comes from doing the job properly, from the preparation through to the final finish. When something isn't right, he'd rather take the time to correct it than walk away from work he isn't proud to put his name to.
Starting TKR Painting gave Troy the freedom to build a business around that approach, where the quality of the workmanship matters more than simply getting through the next job.
TKR Painting is a small family business based in Dunedin, owned equally by Troy and his wife, Akeisha. Troy leads the hands-on painting, while Akeisha contributes to the business alongside their family commitments.
Named for their children, TKR is something they're building together. The goal isn't simply to run a successful painting business, but to build a reputation worth passing on, along with the skills, knowledge and pride in the trade behind it.

At TKR Painting, the standard of our work doesn't change depending on the size of the project or the customer's budget.
We're a small, hands-on business with Troy directly involved in the work. Whether it's a complete new build, major renovation or quality repaint, the time needed for proper preparation and finishing is accounted for from the beginning.
We don't offer a cheaper version of our workmanship by rushing the details or cutting corners. That approach won't suit every budget, and we're comfortable with that. We'd rather be the right painter for the right project than compromise the standards we've built our business around.
We invest in professional Festool sanding and dust-extraction systems because proper preparation plays an essential role in the finished result. Dedicated extraction helps control dust during sanding, while professional airless spraying equipment allows us to achieve smooth, consistent coatings on suitable surfaces, doors and detailed trim.
Whether working in an occupied home or alongside builders on a new build, we treat every property with care. Finished flooring, aluminium joinery, cabinetry and fixtures are protected as appropriate, and work areas are kept orderly and tidy throughout the project.
Clear communication keeps projects running smoothly. We work alongside builders, project managers and other trades, coordinate trusted local subcontractors when specialist work such as plastering or scaffolding is required, and keep clients informed as the project progresses.
OUR WORKMANSHIP
A quality finish starts well before the final coat of paint. On new builds and freshly lined interiors, we follow a thorough preparation and finishing sequence. Every stage builds on the one before it, helping us identify imperfections, achieve consistent coatings and deliver the finished detail we're proud to put our name to.
We begin by sanding timber mitres and filling nail holes and mitres before carefully masking aluminium joinery.
Once the filler has been sanded using dust extraction equipment, we thoroughly vacuum the house and spray the sealer coat.
This initial work prepares the timberwork and seals the freshly stopped surfaces, ready for a more detailed inspection under lighting.
Once the sealer is applied, minor imperfections in freshly stopped walls and ceilings become easier to identify.
We carefully inspect the surfaces under good lighting, fill any imperfections, sand the walls and ceilings, and vacuum again before applying the next coatings.
The first coat is then sprayed onto the walls, followed by two sprayed finish coats on the ceilings.
Taking the time to correct surfaces after sealing helps achieve a cleaner, more consistent finish when the light falls across the room.
Skirtings, architraves, window trims and doors require careful preparation to achieve a smooth finish.
We inspect the trimwork under good lighting, fill any imperfections and sand the surfaces using our Festool detailing sanders, finishing the finer details by hand with 220 to 240 grit paper. After vacuuming, we apply No More Gaps where required and spray the first coat.
The trimwork is then carefully sanded by hand with 320 grit paper. We thoroughly vacuum the trims and floors before spraying the final coat.
Doors receive the same attention to preparation, sanding and spray finishing.
With the trimwork completed, we give the walls another careful sand before moving into the final wall finishes.
We systematically cut in and roll the final coats, working wall by wall to achieve an even, consistent appearance throughout the home.
By this point, the earlier preparation, surface corrections and careful finishing all come together in the completed rooms.
Exterior painting requires an approach suited to the property rather than following the same sequence as a freshly lined interior.
Depending on the surface and its condition, preparation can include washing, removing loose or failing coatings, minor surface repairs, sanding and priming before the appropriate finishing coats are applied.
We work across weatherboards, timber, plaster and masonry, including fascia, soffits, exterior joinery and entrance details. Spray, brush and roller application methods are selected to suit the surface and the work involved.
For renovations and extensions, we also pay close attention to bringing newly finished areas together with existing surfaces, while accounting for the exposure and conditions found throughout Dunedin and coastal Otago.
